Copyright - ALRC Inquiry into exceptions and statutory licences
UNSW's Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre is involved in the ALRC's Inquiry into exceptions and statutory licences in the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) also known as 'Copyright in the Digital Economy', which started in 2012.
Contributions include:
CLPC Submission on the Issues Paper 42 in November 2012, including comments on several technological issues, and general comments about consumer interests and expectations of copyright law drawing from our recent engagement and past research. [PDF]
An tabulated preliminary analysis of proposals in the public submissions made so far, in January 2013. These are divided up by issue, so there are more issues than the 280+ submissions received.
A joint workshop on technological issues around exceptions, on 28 February 2013. Participants from as far afield as Queensland covered issues as diverse as
- the thorny theoretical problems around 'technology neutrality' (Lyria Bennet Moses),
- challenges arising from social media (Nic Suzor),
- the impact of Cloud, and orphan works considerations (David Vaile),
- contracting out of rights (Graham Greenleaf), and even
- whether memes need special recognition (Catherine Bond). [Topics]
Further submissions proposed on issues including Cloud implications and Orphan Works. [See resource list on the latter submitted as a resource for the inquiry - PDF]
